The following objectives are pointed towards solving a significant problem in the Ukraine and elsewhere: the remediation of water containing low-level radioactive wastes by the action of a new superadsorbent that is selective to cesium metal ions.
- To develop a new porous, superadsorbent that once saturated with the target metal ion (Cs) can be heated to form a non-porous glass that permanently sequesters the metal ions and this glass can be safely stored in the proper vaults;
- To characterize these new superadsorbents by modern physical methods; so as to establish the relationships between their composition, structure both physicochemical properties and structural – adsorption performances; and to create scientific bases of synthesis of functionalized polysiloxane superadsorbents with desired properties;
- To design a special procedure and a two-phase reactor for the preparation of solid, porous polyorganosiloxane spheres having a wide commercial interest;
- To carry out transfer of obtained knowledge and technologies to the various companies for production of the necessary marks of organosilica superadsorbents in an industry-scale.
