The Institute of Surface Chemistry was founded in 1986. Today the Institute is an Academician institution having a significant scientific and experimental-industrial potential: 350 co-workers are working at the Institute, including 100 scientific researchers, 17 Professors, 80 PhD and 50 post-graduate students. The Institute is carrying out the fundamental and applied studies along the scientific direction such as chemistry, physics and technology of surface:
- Theory of chemical structure and reactivity of surface of solids, research into the nature of activity sites of surface, mechanisms of adsorption, chemical reactions, and other transformation in a surface layer;
- medicobiological problems of surface;
- research into surface states, diffusion phenomena, charge and mass transfer, phase formation in nanostructures, collective interaction in assemblies of particles, size-quantized effects of systems, interaction with radiation;
- technology of production of nanomaterials, highly disperse oxides, their modified forms, and composites on their basis.
The institute comprises 2 Experimental plants and Special construction-technological department. Six years ago Institute of Surface Chemistry established a new periodic international edition «Chemistry, Physics and Technology of Surface».

The institute of technology was created under the decree of emperor Nikolay Second in December, 1828. The university is one of leaders among the schools of advanced chemical training of Russia in the field of chemical technology of materials of various functional purpose: sorbents, catalysts, polymers, ceramics, glasses, cements, pigments, materials of electronic engineering, of nuclear power etc. At university are prepared engineers, bachelors and magisters for many industries: chemical, electronic, electrochemical, ceramic, building, nuclear, biotechnological etc. The university has multilateral connections both with the Russian enterprises and the organizations, and with the foreign firms and universities in Germany, Italy, USA, France, South Korea, China, Bulgaria, Hungary etc.
The department of chemical technology of materials and products of the electronic engineering, organized in 1967, is one of the leading departments in the university. The basic direction of research is the creation of a wide spectrum of solid materials on the basis of advanced achievements of solid-state chemistry. Scientific workers specialize in development of chemical nanotechnology on principles of the molecular layering method (foreign analogues are atomic layer epitaxy – ALE – or atomic layer deposition – ALD) and the equipment for production of solid materials (sorbents, catalysts, fillers etc.) and thin-film compositions (oxide, nitrides, sulphidic, carbon) both for electronics, and for allied industries.
The scientific research is directed to: 1) synthesis and research nanostructured materials of different functional purpose (dielectric, semiconductive and conductive two dimensional (2D) films for nanoelecrtronic, nanoceramic, nanocomposites, layered heterogenic catalysts, sorbents with modified surface for solving environmental problems and radioecology, etc.; 2) development of scientific fundamentals of chemical nanotechnology taking into consideration advances in the field of precise procedures of chemical synthesis (sol-gel process, the method of molecular layering, chemical deposition of vapous phase in combination with external physical initiating impacts); 3) creation of the technological equipment for realization of chemical nanotechnology for application in different fields of solid phase materials’.
There are many grants and projects in the Department from Ministry of Education of Russian Federation, of Russian Fund of Basic Researchs. The Department carried out projects with firms Bajer (Germany), 3? (USA) etc. There are about 60 students and 15 post-graduate students presently in the Department.
