Prof. R.V.PARISH
UMIST, U.K.
Dick Parish began his career in inorganic chemistry with a PhD with R.S. Nyholm (University College London), followed by a post-doc with F.A. Cotton (then at M.I.T.). He returned to the UK for a short period in the nuclear industry and a further post-doc with N.N. Greenwood (Newcastle upon Tyne), before joining UMIST in 1965. There he worked his way from Lecturer to full Professor, achieving en route the rare distinction of two DSc degrees (London, 1979, and Manchester, 1988). His early interest in the co-ordination chemistry of transition metals expanded into studies of homogeneous and supported catalysts for the hydrogenation and hydrosilylation of unsaturated organics, and this led in turn to the design and preparation of ligand-functionalised polysiloxanes as catalyst supports. In parallel, a developing interest in the chemistry of gold led into medicinal applications in rheumatoid arthritis and the synthesis of possible anti-tumour compounds. These latter projects arose from an extensive programme of work in the application of Mossbauer spectroscopy to co-ordination chemistry, developing and extending methods for establishing the molecular structures of compounds of tin and antimony. The same technique was found to be very powerful for gold compounds, where the oxidation state and co-ordination number of the metal and the nature of the ligands could be deduced from a single spectrum. Professor Parish’s research publications include some 200 reviews and papers and his strong interest in teaching is demonstrated in his two textbooks.
